Gross Merchandise Value (GMV)

What is Gross Merchandise Value (GMV)?

Gross Merchandise Value, or GMV, is a metric used to measure the total value of all goods and services sold through a particular marketplace or platform over a specific period. It's most commonly used by e-commerce companies like Amazon or eBay. GMV is different from revenue because the company doesn't keep all of that money; a large portion of it goes to the third-party sellers on the platform. In a partner context, a vendor might track the total GMV sold through its partner channel as a way to measure the overall size and activity of its ecosystem.
